"Houses like the Meason
Mansion appeared to have been an oasis of luxury..."
- Evelyn Abraham, Antiquarian
Magazine.
Step
inside its grand double doors and you enter the center hall that
boasts a self-supporting 50-step spiral staircase surrounded by eight spacious rooms with 13'-high ceilings. Raised wooden
panels adorn the windows from side to side and top to bottom.
The
kitchen hosts a walk-in fireplace as well as spiral stairs leading
up to the maid's quarters. There are 11 fireplaces
including two very rare and elaborate Robert Wellford mantels -
one in the living room and the other in the dining room.
All
of the raised-panel doors still retain their original hand-made
box locks and hardware. The even plank flooring is 1
1/2" thick oak, tongue and groove. All of the
interior woodwork including the baseboards, chair rail and
coving are a mixture of oak, walnut and poplar.
The mansion has a total of twenty
rooms, not including the 113 foot long open basement with its
fireplace supports fashioned in grand stone arches.
One
can only imagine the social gatherings that took place in this
great early-American manor... |
